Give yourself a “raise” with a breast lift!

As women age, often their breasts lose their shape and youthful, natural lift.  A surgical procedure known as a breast lift or mastopexy will enhance the shape and re-adjust the location of the breasts.  Breasts are made up of tissue and fat. If the breast sags, it is usually because the breast pocket is too big for the tissue and fat creating flattened breasts.  There are many things that cause this change within the breast to happen such as increasing age, pregnancy, genetics, weight loss and/or gain.   Often, wearing a support bra is necessary for women with sagging breasts to maintain the appearance of a perky breast and to heighten it to the desired location on the chest.  A breast lift procedure is the only way to permanently restore a youthful contour to the breasts.

Many female patients combine a breast augmentation with a mastopexy (breast lift) or simply have a breast lift alone to return the breast to a more youthful shape and position on the chest.   Incorporating a breast implant will increase the firmess of the breast and enhance the shape following the mastopexy.  During a mastopexy or lift, the nipple and areola are relocated to a higher, more natural location on the breast.  Often, if the areola is too large for the reshaped breast, the areola size will be reduced to better fit the new breast shape.   During the procedure, the breast tissue is tightened and any sagging breast skin is reduced resulting in youthful, perky breasts with or without the support of a bra.

To create a breast lift, the size of the skin envelope is decreased.  If the patient chooses to add an implant to the procedure, increasing the size of the breast with the implant will also create the youthful breast look. Incisions are made to sculpt the new breast position and raise the nipple and areola. The recommended technique for each patients breast lift is based on the breast shape and size as well as the size and position of the nipple and/or areola. The breasts will take on the new shape immediately after surgery.  Of course, the repositioning of the breasts is also visible immediately following the procedure; however, the breasts will settle a bit over a few weeks post-op.    Patients usually return to work within four to seven days depending on the extent of the procedure and the patients type of employment.   Incisions will start to heal and scars begin to fade within three months following the surgery.
