Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are common in both men and women, but mostly women.  These are the veins that appear near the top of  the skin in the legs usually in a blue or green color that often make a women’s leg look like a “road map”.   It is very common to see varicose veins appear during and/or after pregnancy.  During pregnancy, much of the weight gained is water weight which tends to be located in the lower portion of a women’s body. This can create poor circulation in the legs which results in varicose veins.  The veins become more visible during pregnancy because the blood volume increases and the pressure caused by the baby is pressing on those veins that are pumping the blood back to the mother’s heart.  This pressure and increased volume causes the veins to stretch; therefore, becoming more visible.  There are several ways to combat varicose veins such as sclerotherapy and laser treatments post pregnancy.  Sclerotherapy involves the injection of a solution into the problem veins which causes them to collapse.  Laser treatments are available to help rid the legs of the unsightly “road maps”.  Contact Dr. Guanciale’s office today to determine which treatment is best for you!  843.995.5005
