The Palomar® laser system is a high powered laser that removes unwanted tattoos and pigmented lesions by emitting a highly focused beam of laser light. The beam passes harmlessly through the outer layer of the skin and is absorbed by the excess pigment (tattoo ink) within the skin without harming the surrounding healthy cells. This light beam is then converted to heat. The heat creates a rise in the temperature of the targeted area fracturing or breaking the pigment into tiny particles. The particles are then carried away naturally by the body’s lymphatic system – essentially disappearing.
A wide range of pigmented lesions and tattoos can be successfully treated. A tattoo’s characteristics such as the color, depth, and the ink’s chemical composition all affect the laser’s response. Certain colors of light are absorbed by specific colors of the tattoo ink. Ink colors such as black, red, and dark blue respond quickly to treatments. Green, purple, brown, light orange and light blue colors will respond, but they may require more treatments than the dark ink colors.
Depending on the size and location of the tattoo, each treatment will take about 10-20 minutes. Light, faint tattoos may fade after only one treatment, but most tattoos will require five or more treatments to receive the ultimate result. Spacing the treatments about six weeks apart will allow for the loosened particles previously targeted to fully exit the body. Our lasers and pulsed light devices deliver energy to target and destroy vascular and pigmented lesions associated with spider veins, reticular veins, rosacea, telangiectasias, hemangiomas, sun damage, age spots, dyschromia, melasma, poikiloderma, and angiomas. Through selective photothermolysis, these treatments target different chromophores in the skin, which selectively absorb the laser or light energy as heat.
